Film Review: Isn’t It Romantic?

Rebel Wilson is back again playing a skilled but undermined architect called Natalie who hates romantic comedies, but evidently, she finds herself stuck in one…

The film also stars Liam Hemsworth, Adam Devine and Priyanka Chopra who all play their role in creating the heavily clichéd film. Natalie (Wilson), a cynic who is blind to love finds herself in New York where she is mugged on the subway. This leads to her waking up in an alternate reality. The film itself ridicules and embraces many clichés of the rom-com genre, including a variety of references to Pretty Woman, Notting Hill and 13 Going on 30, whilst playing A Thousand Miles (aka ‘making my way downtown, walking fast, faces pass.) throughout.

After first finding out about this impending release I knew I had to watch it as soon as it came out. It is definitely one of Netflix’s more upbeat and enjoyable films to watch as it includes hilarious character stereotypes such as the gay sidekick, the lovable best friend, the perfect swimsuit supermodel and the hot rich love interest. The strongest part to take home from this film is arguably the message to love yourself and to understand that you are more than enough. It provides you with the grass isn’t always greener on the other side theme as when Natalie (Wilson) gets the hot man (Hemsworth) and the beautiful apartment, it isn’t all it is cracked up to be. I certainly recommend watching if you want to catch Liam Hemsworth in a towel.

What’s impressive about the film is just how much effort is put into the new reality. The opening scenes in New York are dreary, dull and easily recognisable for anyone actually living in New York while her rom-com universe is carefully designed with bright, vibrant colours and flowers everywhere. It gives you a stark contrast between two different types of New York. After having visited myself, I can definitely see how the city fits into both concepts from the film.

Rebel Wilson hasn’t only cemented her place amongst Amy Schumer and Melissa McCarthy in the comedy sector; she has established herself through a substantial amount of films. These include How to be single, Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids. I cannot wait to see what Rebel Wilson does next as she never fails to make me laugh. If you are looking for an upbeat rom-com then this is right up your street.
