Food Review: The Playwright

The Playwright, formerly known as the Orange Tree, takes over the most popular spot in Nottingham for a student pub, especially in Summer.

Located on Shakespeare street the new pub offers plentiful outdoor sitting space to enjoy its range of beers, cocktails and expertly sourced artisan food. The Pub is based on the Charles Wellsā€™ Pizza, Pots & Pints concept which offers a menu of freshly made pizzas and terracotta one-pot meals for under Ā£12 (plus a hearty Sunday roast thatā€™s not-to-be-missed). The beers are selected from the notorious Charles Wells portfolio and the soft drinks are sourced from sustainable chemical free companies; each one is worth a try.

Jon Killett, general manager at The Playwright, Nottingham added that ā€œWe cater for those with free-from dietary requirements, including several tasty vegan dishes. Whatā€™s more, if none of the listed pizzas are tickling your fancy, then you are welcome to create your own with gluten-free and vegan bases available, plus a selection of meat-free toppings such as vegan cheese.ā€ An expert service that sets the standard for other pubs in Nottingham.

I would recommend the Padana, a vegan pizza with guacamole, sour sauce and tortilla chips, this pizza was strongly recommended to me and it certainly delivered. The fusion of flavours wasnā€™t like anything that I have experienced before and much like many other items on the menu it will expand your tastes. For a drink you must try the popular cocktails Street Lemonade and Cherry Cola, both are deliciously sweet and will get you thinking of warm summer days.

The Playwright doesnā€™t have just food and drink to offer, there is also various live music and events showcasing the very best talent from Nottingham and beyond. The pub will also boast two adaptable event spaces called Hamletā€™s Hideawayā€™ and ā€˜Poets Cornerā€™ which can be joined to create the ultimate location for a range of celebrations from society meet ups to making the most of the new cocktails in happy hour.

If youā€™re looking to preserve as much of your remaining overdraft as possible at the end of the year then Jon Killett offers these student friendly offers at The Playwright: ā€œJoin us for 2-4-1 pizzas on ā€˜Happy Mondayā€™s or get a free portion of wings with every Charlie Wells pint on ā€˜Wingman Wednesdaysā€™. We also offer Ā£5 cocktails and a selection of discounted Charles Wells beers during our daily Happy Hour. Please enquire with the staff to find out more.ā€

The opening kickstarts an exciting year of expansion for the companies Pizza, Pots & Pints programme, with plans for five new launches across the country throughout 2019.  I for one will certainly be going to The Playwright for my final meal of the year with my housemates, I hope to see you there too!
