Announced as the winner of the “Under The Radar” award supported by HMV at the VO5 NME Awards 2018, Manchester quartet Pale Waves are definitely worth the hype.
With several sold out shows and the goal of a number album in mind, Heather and Ciara of the emo-pop band, spoke to Platform about their new single, musical ambitions, and what they’re proudest of achieving as a band, ahead of their gig at the Bodega in Nottingham.
What’s the story of how you came together as a band?
We met when we moved to Manchester, the first day we got there and then started making music together almost instantly. Then we met the boys, and they just sort of came along. Pretty simple – it wasn’t really simple – but it kind of just happened!
Describe Pale Waves in three words.
Emo pop music.
What is the inspiration/message behind your new single, “Television Romance”?
I guess you could it’s about how not all romance is the way we see it on television! It’s about someone being really persistent and not understanding that they are going a bit too far. When the romance someone tries to create with you, but it’s just an image. All superficial and they’re not really there for you at all.
Who are your major musical influences?
We are into the 80’s music and R’n’B. Also grew up listening to The Eagles, Rod Stewart.
If you could collaborate with artist, alive or dead, who would it be?
Madonna would be cool or Britney Spears. Girl power!

Any artist you’ve recently been into?
I really like Anna of the North, she’s really good.
‘Till date, what would you say is your biggest achievement as a band is?
Selling most of shows out, on our first ever headline tour. It feels quite special and we’re very proud of that.
Name a dream venue that you want to play at?
The Academy at Manchester or at the Ritz. Our own show at MSG, maybe. That’s our big ambition.
What’s next for you guys? What do you hope to achieve next?
Number one album!
