Here at Platform, we like to remind you that our committee isn’t made of pen-pushing robots and that we are very much human. As proof, we’re exploring our humanity through our the music that has kept us sane this June…

Gone West ā€“ Canyons (album)

Gone West are a fresh new band on the country-pop scene, led by familiar face Colbie Caillat. Gone West have been releasing songs from their debut album since January 2019, and for me, it felt like they got better with every single. Rather than a self-titled album, the group opted for an eponymous debut single of Gone West, followed by the heart-breaking What Could Have Been. Other highlights on the album include Knew You and When to Say Goodbye, all proving that Gone West knows how to make a perfect and heart-wrenching country ballad.

Gen Hoshino – Halfway (single)

The title track of Gen Hoshinoā€™s 2018 album Pop Virus – about a pandemic that causes a cultural reset – has been a prominent part of my lockdown soundtrack, mainly due to its uncanny prescience. This month, the actor and J-Pop star dropped a new single thatā€™s becoming another regular listen.

Iā€™ve not learnt enough Japanese over the past few weeks to actually understand Halfwayā€™s lyrics, but thatā€™s never stopped me from enjoying a good beat. In particular, it makes for a nice backdrop while working, but with great vocals and a bouncy rap verse that set it apart from your average ā€œrelax & studyā€ mix.

Peach Pit – Tommy’s Party (single)

This month Iā€™ve been listening to this mellow and gentle track by Canadian indie pop band, Peach Pit. This song is a soulful description of hazy drunken youth, as the singer describes all heā€™s sees at a party heā€™s attending.

It is impactful for any listener who wants to sit and reminisce in their memories. Itā€™s also about the loss of old friends which is particularly interesting to me this month, linking to an article Iā€™ve been writing. Itā€™s a deeply emotional track and will hit you in your feelings, so get listening!

Who Says ā€“ Selena Gomez (single)

This song is a bit of a throwback, but it somehow made its way to the top of my repeat rewind playlist on Spotify (as well as other Selena Gomez hits for this month). Listening to this song boosts energy into me ā€“ due to its fast pace beat – and makes me ready for the day ahead. Not only does this song encourage an energy surge but listening to the lyrics carefully adds more depth to the song.

ā€œIā€™m no beauty queen/ Iā€™m just beautiful me.ā€ For anyone insecure, Selena tells us that everyone is beautiful in their own way. Itā€™s a message – for anyone who doubts themselves – that everyone needs to hearā€¦

The Psychedelic Furs – Love My Way (Single)

If youā€™re looking to create a playlist for the following sunny days this summer, you might want to add this song.

The Psychedelic Fursā€™ song has that 80s feeling to it that will make your days warmer and the iced drinks in the sun more enjoyable. Additionally, this song reminds me of one of my all-time favourite films, Call Me By Your Name, which you need to watch if you havenā€™t already.

Another fact about this song – it was originally written for gay people who are trying to figure out their sexuality. Although it has a powerful message, the song can be listened to by anyone and it will certainly make your summer days.

From the lyrics to the lively instrumental, I love how this song makes everyone get up and dance whenever it is played.
