CJ De Barra: The Non-Binary Archivist Reclaiming Queer Stories

CJ De Barra, a non-binary queer historian, journalist and the founder of Notts Queer History archive, has built a career rooted in uncovering hidden stories.

CJ De Barra (they/them) describes themselves as a ‘radical historian’ and ‘accidental archivist’ – someone who never planned to build an archive but felt compelled to preserve the stories others ignored.

Over the past few years, Barra’s work has evolved into the rapidly growing Notts Queer History archive, a project that now spans across two archive sites – Sparrow’s Nest in Nottingham and Bishop’s Gate in London.

When asked about their thoughts on queer history, Barra said: “Often, queer history isn’t included in museums or ‘official’ history. So we collect it ourselves.”

Key Facts About Notts Queer History Archive:

Founded in 2022

174 interviews with LGBTQ+ people aged 18–93

208 historical items collected (transcripts, books, artefacts)

more than 830 newspaper stories published

While talking about the most memorable people they’ve spoken with, Barra recounted the story of Laurence.

They said: “Laurance is special because he remembers Nottingham in the early 60s. He came from Sheffield to work as a nurse and could really shine a light on what the city was like before partial decriminalisation, when homosexuality was only partially legalised.”

Stories like Laurence’s reflect the archive’s mission: to highlight and share queer experiences from both the past and present.

By collecting personal histories, documenting local queer culture, and sharing them through books, exhibitions and charity events, De Barra ensures LGBTQ+ voices are preserved for future generations.
