Sunderland win 159th Tyne–Wear derby with stoppage-time stunner

Sunderland claimed a dramatic late victory over Newcastle United to win the Tyne–Wear derby 2–1 at St James’ Park, sealing local bragging rights with a stoppage-time winner in a pulsating Premier League clash.

The hosts struck first inside the opening 10 minutes, capitalising on a costly defensive error from Sunderland. A misplaced pass under pressure allowed Newcastle to pounce, with Anthony Gordon finishing clinically to ignite the home crowd and give his side an early advantage.

In a fixture defined by intensity and emotion, Sunderland gradually grew into the contest after a difficult start.

Newcastle dominated early possession and looked dangerous on the break, but the visitors showed resilience to stay in the game and limit further damage before half-time.

The turning point arrived in the second half as Sunderland found their rhythm. Their equaliser came in the 57th minute through Chemsdine Talbi, who reacted quickest in a crowded penalty area following a set-piece to fire home and silence St James’ Park.

From that moment, the momentum shifted. Sunderland pressed with greater urgency, while Newcastle struggled to regain control.

The home side thought they had restored their lead at one stage, only for the effort to be ruled out following a VAR intervention, adding further frustration for Eddie Howe’s side.

The match was not without controversy. Play was briefly halted during the second half after allegations of racist abuse directed at Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida. Officials followed protocol, and the incident is now subject to investigation, casting a shadow over an otherwise gripping encounter.

Despite the disruption, Sunderland remained composed and continued to push for a winner. Their persistence paid off in dramatic fashion deep into stoppage time when Brian Brobbey struck in the 90th minute. The forward’s decisive finish sparked wild celebrations among the travelling supporters and sealed a memorable comeback victory.

The final whistle confirmed a significant result not only in terms of local pride but also in the Premier League standings.

Sunderland’s win sees them leapfrog their rivals in the table, underlining their progress since returning to the top flight and reinforcing their growing confidence this season.

For Newcastle, the defeat compounds a difficult period, with defensive lapses once again proving costly.

Having taken an early lead, they were unable to maintain their advantage, and questions may now be asked about their consistency and ability to manage high-pressure matches.

The Tyne–Wear derby, one of English football’s fiercest rivalries, once again delivered drama, controversy and late heartbreak. With both teams battling for position in mid-table, the stakes were high, but it was Sunderland who held their nerve when it mattered most.
