An Electric night at Rock City – The Amazons 21st Century Fiction Tour

I recently had the pleasure of attending the fifth show of The Amazons 21’st Century Fiction tour to mark the explosion of their fourth studio album and it was successful in exceeding all of my expectations. Supporting them were the up and coming indie band Overpass, newly formed, yet the promise for their success is immense.

Starting the night on an extremely strong note was the 30 minute set of pure indie heart and soul that lived and breathed through Overpass. The four piece band, formed in 2020, had their dynamic set secured when delivering hits such as ‘Beautiful’ ‘3AM’ and ‘Take it or leave it’. Tuning into warm vocals and optimistic notes on these guitar anthems, Overpass assured me that we’d be seeing more of them in the future.

Introducing the highly anticipated Amazons set was a taste of the bands heavier side with ‘Joe bought a gun’. The 9th track on their latest album quickly got the crowd ecstatic and jumping with heavy bass and lively drum beats, energy for the remainder of the performance.

One thing was utterly clear to me throughout the entirety of this gig. I was receiving a truly raw and honest display through this band. Lead singer Matt Thomson expressed his unfiltered emotion through his vocals, not holding back one bit; passionately belting each lyric.

Many bands have their ‘We made it’ moment, and when that moment arrives, it is beautiful. Thomson repeatedly mentioned how incredible this venue was to play and how ‘Rock City’ is his personal favourite.

However, I cannot imagine how accomplished he and his bandmates must have felt when having nearly two thousand fans echoing ‘junk food forever, late nights together, jackets were leather….’

While show stuck with heavy hits; ‘In My Mind’, ‘Black Magic’ and ‘Ultraviolet’, The Amazons are unfailing in delivering a stripped-back, melodic version of who we usually see, with hits such as ‘Georgia’ and ‘Go All The Way’.

Ending the night on a four song long encore with ‘Junk Food Forever’, ‘Stay With Me’, ‘Ultraviolet’, and finally, ‘Black Magic’, I can confidently say that The Amazons are entirely necessary to add to your listening library if you need a dance, jump, scream or cry.
