In today’s world, particularly for university students, Halloween has become an outlet for dressing up with friends.
Yes, it’s fun planning your costume collabs (I’m doing Disney princesses this year), but why not make it even more fun and switch the Shein panic buys for versatile charity shop finds!
Or even pull off a DIY masterpiece like the Karate Kid (iykyk).
Ready for some scary figures?
Annually, around 2,000 tonnes of plastic go into landfill from Halloween costumes, which personally I find pretty spooky.
Something even more disturbing … 63% of these costumes are made from materials that take centuries to decompose. Terrifying, I know.
Where to shop?
Nottingham has countless vintage and charity shops, you can save money and the planet, win win.
A few of my favourites in the city include Glass Onion, COW and White Rose (pretty sure there’s one on every corner of the city at this point).
I recently visited Glass Onion to see what they had to offer. Speaking to Darlia, a member of their team, I asked if she had noticed any increase in people coming for the purpose of Halloween.
“People come in for inspiration,” she said. “A girl recently came in wanting to try the exact pirate outfit our mannequin in the window was wearing.”
Darlia did however highlight the fact that unfortunately vintage/second pieces might not always fit, and that the girl ended up going home with only the bandana. I’m sure one of the other charity shops in the city got her fully kitted out for Rock City’s ‘Get Spooky’.
But this is where Vinted comes into play.
Everything you need on one app if you don’t fancy the trek to Hockley (where the best charity shops are imo). Simply type in what you are after, select your size, and you can scroll for hours (or I can at least).
Not only can you buy unique pieces to wow your friends on Halloween, but you can sell your costume once you’re done on there too! This goes for Ocean Wednesdays too by the way.
Hopefully you are feeling inspired to get creative and have a spooky eco-friendly Halloween!
