Throwback review: Gilmore Girls

Celebrating it’s 20th anniversary this year, we look back on the classic TV series, Gilmore Girls.

Gilmore Girls first blessed our screens back in 2000.  It remains a beloved series and even had a spin-off series in 2016 to catch us up on the lives of our favourite mother-daughter duo.

The original series started 20 years ago in Stars Hollow with a teenage Rory and Lorelai in her early 30’s. Over several seasons we saw them blossom in their studies and careers thanks to the loving support of the community and the Gilmore name.

Stars Hollow is one of those small towns where everyone knows everything about everyone, especially with the help of town gossips like Miss Patty and Babette. But it remains full of town spirit thanks to the controlling Taylor and oddball Kirk.

We watched as Rory move schools, go to college, and gets her first real job in journalism. We cheer when Lorelai finally receives her diploma, we laugh as the girls continue to crack jokes even at the most inappropriate times, and we cry each time their hearts get broken.

The show teaches us the importance of family, the value of friendship and why coffee is an essential part of life! It shares the hardships of starting over, moving schools, running a business, and trying to succeed in the world. But it also shows us how to appreciate good friends, take risks and go on wild adventures!

There are so many amazing scenes throughout the series, but some of the most memorable include when Rory is arrested for stealing a boat with Logan, when Lorelai proposed to Luke, and when Rory got hit by a deer. That’s right the deer ran into her car, not the other way around.

But it isn’t just the Gilmore girls that we love, it is also their friends, and the series remains popular due to its timeless characters. Who can keep track of all the accidents Sookie had in the kitchen, the dozens of people Luke has kicked out his Diner, or the amount of maids Emily has scared away?

We were also introduced to many actors who have starred in our other favourite series and films, such as Mädchen Amick (Sherry) who currently stars in Riverdale, Melissa McCarthy (Sookie) was in Bridesmaids and the new Ghostbuster film, and Jared Padalecki (Dean) who starred in all fifteen seasons of Supernatural.

Meanwhile, Alexis Bledel (Rory) has since starred in The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants and The Handmaid’s Tale, whilst Lauren Graham (Lorelai) has been in dozens of films and TV series, most recently Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.

Gilmore Girls remains a fan favourite and is a great series for you to reminisce on during lockdown.
