TV Review: The Great Escapists

With another lockdown in place, I’m sure we are all wanting to escape from our homes to a remote desert island. But, for Richard Hammond and Tory Belleci, it’s the opposite.

The Grand Tour and Top Gear star, alongside his myth-busting partner are stranded on a desert island after their boat loses control in Amazon’s latest original series.

But with one man set on being rescued and the other set on making the most of it, chaos is inevitable. From racing handmade go-karts to building a lighthouse, maybe being stranded on an island isn’t too bad…

Although the series is a short one, with just six 40-minute episodes, it is the sort of light-hearted comedy that is worth a watch.

It’s a combination of all the petrol head ideas you would expect to see in The Grand Tour combined with science experiments.

Despite some parts feeling a little over scripted, most of the show has been put together in a fantastic way. This included the scenes where the two men are speaking to the police, as the way to narrate the events that have occurred.

If you don’t watch it for the explosions and inventions, you should definitely watch it to see “Clarkson”, who despite being a little old and leathery is the duo’s most trusted companion.

But when the two individuals are confined in close quarters, it’s unsurprising that there were some disagreements along the way and at one point even a full-scale war broke out. Belleci tried to defend himself with a giant slingshot and Hammond fought back with a “tank”.

However, the duo make a good team majority of the time, proving their survival skills through many creations, including some sort of helicopter, an automatic fish catching machine, and they even found a way to generate electricity from several of Hammonds essential fans.
