TV Series Review: RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 2 – The Final

The time has finally come to crown the new UK Drag Race superstar, but after last night’s shocking finale results, we all have one question in mind: why? Warning major spoilers ahead.

The search for the UK’s next drag superstar continues with judges RuPaul, Michelle Visage, Alan Carr and Graham Norton.

Entering the work room everybody is beaming with excitement as it’s the final stretch of the race, with just one last hurdle for the drag queens to leap over.

Heading into this final it could be anybody’s crown, but the two frontrunners clawing for the crown were Bimini Bon Boulash and Lawrence Chaney.

This week the final maxi challenge involves the contestants competing in the toughest challenge yet of the season. They have to compose their own solo verses to the RuPaul song “A little bit of Love”, then they need to complete an intense choreographed routine to the song. Finally, they will have a personal lunch with RuPaul and Michelle Visage to plead their case and talk about their journey in life.

Firstly, the lunch with the judges was great to watch, getting to understand who the drag queens are even more was a lovely experience. Tayce shared that their Dad was in Wham! – WHAT? Why wasn’t this discussed more, I need answers. Bimini revealed they studied journalism, and as a student journalist writing this review, I was shocked, but it made me love them even more.

Focus swiftly changes to preparing for the dance routine, which I always find least interesting in a Drag Race Episode, however it is great watching them prepare for the most intense challenge of the season.

Now the time has come for the final part, the song/dance routine – “A Little Bit of Love”. All of the top performed brilliantly with great lyrics and a smooth dance routine, personally I think Tayce performed the best with Bimini in a close second.

The moment the rest of the cast came to join the performance made me smile, especially seeing Veronica who couldn’t participate due to catching Covid when the season began filming again. What a great final performance by them all.

Time for the runway! The theme this week is final four eleganza extravaganza. My two favourite looks of the night come from Bimini Bon Boulash and Ellie Diamond. Bimini came out in a couture bridal runway look reminiscing Madonna and punk, which is absolutely stunning and my favourite look of the night.

I also loved Ellie Diamond’s good witch, fairy tale style outfit which is just classic Ellie but in an extravagant way. Lawrence and Tayce came out in great outfits, but for my taste it didn’t compare to the outfits the other two presented.

Then came time for judge’s critiques, which were fairly on point (until the final decision) with all four of them having a chance for the crown. I have to declare how incredible it was watching Bimini go from being in the bottom two in the first week to winning four challenges and not being back in the bottom since. Very impressive turnaround.

Going into the final lip-sync it was a good decision to have Bimini, Tayce and Lawrence as the top three I predicted this would be the case with all showing immaculate talent. The final lip-sync song was “I’m still standing” by Elton John – a brilliant final song choice.

In the lip-sync all showed their heart and put full passion into it, however Tayce and Bimini did outperform Lawrence I believe due to the dancing and fiery lip-sync in the performance.

Now, it’s time for the crown. Who will be the next UK Drag Race superstar…Lawrence Chaney? Now before I go further, I have to explain that Lawrence is absolutely hilarious and one of the best queens of the show, with me rooting for them in the first few weeks.

However, as weeks progressed, Bimini showed so much progression and improvement, they had the best track record and had every right to the crown. Unfortunately, I do believe the crown should’ve gone to Bimini, but nevertheless Lawrence will wear the crown with pride and we should be glad all of the contestants were able to return after one roller-coaster ride of a season in a pandemic.

This season was an absolutely fantastic one, comedy and drama shine throughout with an amazing cast. Although it has to a bitter end with many questionable decisions, the season did extremely well in comparison to season 13 currently airing on the American version. It’s been an absolute pleasure reviewing this series and I have to give ‘Condragulations’ to Lawrence Chaney. My final message is for RuPaul – put Bimini Bon Boulash on all stars immediately!
