Two Nottingham Trent students are fighting back against female violence

The Nottingham Trent University students are targeting female-directed violence by offering self-defence classes to other students.

Lewis Joshi, a 22-year-old business student, is running the women-only self-defence class.

The session’s aim is to teach girls four different techniques which they can use to protect themselves if they ever find themselves in a dangerous environment.

Lewis said: ā€œThat one technique could save their life.ā€

After recent womenā€™s rights protests, Lewis decided to use his 19 years of taekwondo and boxing experience to make Nottingham women feel safer on the streets.

He continued: ā€œIā€™ve been wanting to do something like this for a long time, Iā€™m a very big activist when it comes to womenā€™s rights and equal rights in general.

ā€œIt comes down to my mum who is a very string feminist who has never let me be sexist or misogynistic.

ā€œItā€™s horrible you guys have to go through that every time you leave the house.

ā€œItā€™s heart breaking and itā€™s one of the biggest issues we need to tackle.

ā€œThere are techniques people can learn and knowing you have that arsenal in your body gives you a new level of confidence.ā€

He will also be producing and distributing cue cards for attendees to take away with them to remember what they learn.

Emily Hoang, a 20-year-old law student, is running the event alongside Lewis as a female host.

After the physical activities, she is offering a safe place for participants to share their stories and talk about their experiences openly.

She said: ā€œWe are the 97%.

ā€œI wanted to make it apparent to the women who want to come, because it could be daunting doing it in public or with a male trainer, that itā€™s a safe place.ā€

The event will be running on Saturday the 20th March near the pavilion at the Arboretum.

Emily will also be running an Instagram live story for those wanting to join from home.

The event will be Covid secure, they are urging those attending to social distance and bring face coverings.
