Why Trent media societies came together to cover #NTSUelections2021

The three media societies joining forces for the first time is one more unique thing to add to your ‘unprecedented times’ list for this academic year.

Platform, Trent TV and Fly Live will be collaborating for the first time to give students the best content possible for Nottingham Trent Students’ Union elections.

This means that we will be working together across all three platforms – online, video and radio to offer you the most unique coverage.

We will continue publishing written interviews too, and breaking stories as well as live updates on the elections.

Platform’s Editor-in-Chief Faith Pring said: “Partnering with Trent TV and Fly Live is an amazing way to make sure that the NTU student body properly understands these elections, what they are about and who they can vote for.

“Making sure that the candidates are well-represented when it comes to making their voices heard is the most important thing and our collaboration will only benefit them.

“I think this partnership between all three societies is the start of many future collaborations and will serve as a great example of how the three can work together towards a common goal.

“Platform has grown massively this year and will only continue to grow working alongside Trent TV and Fly Live.”

The other two societies – Fly Live and Trent TV – have already set up the schedule for when they will be delivering exclusive footage and recorded debates of the candidates.

President of Trent TV, Jordan Holdstock, added: “First and foremost we want to ensure the students of NTU are receiving a fair unbiased coverage of a very important part of NTSU life.

“This year especially has shown how integral these representatives are in improving conditions for students and so we’re doing this to try and push for the student body to make their voices heard.

“And beyond that, maybe this can inspire students for future years to take interest in university politics and have a positive influence on the experiences of their peers.

Jordan added that this ‘a big step’ for student journalism at Nottingham Trent University.

“From a more personal and society level, this is a great opportunity for myself and Trent TV members to work with some very talented people at our fellow media societies who we may otherwise not have as much interaction with.

“University politics isn’t exactly covering the House of Parliament but it’s still a big step in working to ensure high quality coverage and accurate reporting, providing a marked difference from the sort of content we produce throughout the rest of the year.”

Station manager and president of Fly Live Lewis Rhys Jones said this opportunity comes at a time when students perhaps feel disconnected with the university life due to pandemic.

He is positive about the outcome of this journalistic initiative: “This is an exciting opportunity for everyone at Fly Live, Platform Magazine and Trent TV.

“We’ll be playing to each society’s strengths to produce fantastic coverage for this year’s NTSU Election.

“We can’t wait to get started and inform Trent’s students on all they need to know before voting for their next SU executive.

“In a year where we haven’t been able to experience campus life as we usually would, Trent Media will work hard to make sure all students feel informed and involved with the NTSU Election across social media and online.

“It’s always nice for societies to collaborate and this coverage will give each member of our media societies a chance to befriend and work with new people.”
