Can Nottingham Trent University football overcome the University of Nottingham to draw level in 2024 Varsity series?

Nottingham Trent University will look to win their third successive Varsity football match against rivals University of Nottingham as the teams face off on the final day of the 2024 series.

NTU will be looking to overturn the current 4-3 scoreline of this years Varsity series with UoN coming out on top in both men’s and women’s volleyball on Tuesday night.

The series still hangs in the balance with all still to play for and Trent trying to eran their first Varsity crown since 2011.

In University of Nottingham menā€™s 1st last game, they lost away to Chichester in the National Championships Quarter-Final.

Nottingham Trent also lost to UONā€™s latest opponents on penalties in the National Championships Semi-Final.

After a goal at the death last year sent the ties to penalties, UONā€™s captain Tom Howard is looking to right the wrongs of last yearā€™s derby.

He said: ā€œObviously last year was a huge disappointment and a painful pill to swallow.

ā€œHowever, we showed our capabilities and were unlucky to lose.

ā€œOur approach remains the same, we believe our hard work in training will pay off and like I said, last year we showed we can turn up to the occasion and hopefully this year will end differently.ā€

NTU captain Tom Cursons converted a crucial penalty in last yearā€™s Varsity and heā€™s hoping they maintain their good record against their rivals.

He said: ā€œWe definitely take confidence from last year’s win.

ā€œWeā€™ve played two matches against them this season too which weā€™ve won and kept two clean sheets so thereā€™s reason to be confident.

ā€œOn the flip side of that, they wonā€™t want to lose three on the bounce so weā€™re well aware that theyā€™re going to come out swinging and weā€™re going to have to be at our best to lift the trophy again.ā€

The tie takes place on March 12, 2024, at 2:30pm held at Greenwich Avenue, the home of Basford United FC.
