Single Review: Kygo & Zak Abel – Freedom

After hearing Freedom perhaps Golden Hour will be the saviour album we need to rescue us out of 2020…

With a first listen, I simply would not believe what I had heard.

Kygo is back and has released another track from his upcoming third album, Golden Hour. It probably will not sound sonically like Kacey Musgraves’, but as they both have tracks to make us feel forever hopeful and relate around positivity, then I am all for it.

After recently releasing his collaboration on Like It Is with American rapper Tyga and Swedish singer Zara Larsson, Kygo is once again instilling us with a new track from the comfort of our own home.

The track is called Freedom. It is collaboration between the Norwegian DJ as well as English vocalist Zak Abel, who I first remember listening to when his debut album Only When we’re Naked dropped. Ever since then, he has been on my one to watch list.

Beginning with Zak’s soothing voice that echoes in a soft melody, Zak shares his inspiring vocals, which flow immaculately with Kygo’s pleasant-sounding piano instrumentals. Reiterating the idea that we will all get through the current situation together and nobody is in it alone. As you wake up tomorrow and look out at that summer sky, remember that.

It will definitely make you feel better, put a smile on your face and lighten the load. This is somewhat ironic, given that the music video was originally supposed to be in the Maldives according to the opening of the music video, which was later shot in both their homes.

However, that does not make it any less of decent song and is as visually creative as one can be given the circumstances. It is sweet and makes me feel hopeful, which is what we should all try to feel, despite how hard it is.

Uplifting and melodic, Freedom is a gem in its own right. The sort of timely tune that yells: “Here’s to a corona-less 2021”.

What I feel lacks in repetitive lyricism is made up for by Zak Abel’s mature vocals and Kygo’s signature sounding production.
