MPs vote in favour of vaccine passes to enter nightclubs and other large venues

Students will need to show certification in order to enter nightclubs, sports stadiums and other large venues after a vote by MPs this evening.

It comes after Boris Johnson received a large backing for Covid passes in England – it was not, however, without a large number of his own MPs rebelling against the Prime Minister.

A total of 96 Tory MPs voted against the Prime Minister but the measure was always likely to pass with the backing of Labour.

It means NHS Covid passes – showing full vaccination (at least two jabs) or a negative test within 48 hours – will be legally required in order to enter venues from Wednesday.

The venues for which passes will now be needed for include:

  • nightclubs
  • indoor unseated venues with more than 500 people
  • unseated outdoor venues with more than 4,000 people
  • any venue with more than 10,000 people

Earlier in the day, MPs also voted in favour of mandating face masks in most indoor settings.
