Reality TV catch-up: What you should start watching

2020 is in full swing, which means it’s time for Platform’s Brandon Boyd to get you caught up on the best shows to start off the year with…

Dancing on Ice with twelve very unique celebrities including Radzi Chinyanganya from Blue Peter, Perri Kiely from one of Britain’s Got Talent winner Diversity and Maura Higgins from the previous series of Love Island in 2019.

So far all of the dancing couples have performed once, and we saw Lucrezia Millarini (ITV News host) facing against Trisha Goddard (a television host and entertainer) battle it off to avoid being eliminated in week one. Unfortunately, it was Trisha who got voted out by the judges, and only eleven celebrities with their couples remain in the competition!

The Voice UK is also back to search for another batch of amazing singers. So far, twelve singers have made it into one of the coaches teams including 16 year olds Katie and Aoife from Ireland, SheZar, 31, (a backing singer for Paloma Faith) and sister to Labrinth and Blaize China who’s rendition of Demi Lovato’s Instruction sent the judges flying with excitement.

New judge Meghan Trainor has also joined the panel alongside Olly Murs, Will.i.am and Sir Tom Jones! Only 40 singers will compete in the show, so see next week who’s next to impress the judges?

The Masked Singer has also been a hit with the public. Hosted by Joel Dommett, the show sees twelve celebrities masked in an outfit, performing for a live audience and in-front of a panel of judges including Davina McCall and Rita Ora! With characters including ‘Duck’, ‘Queen Bee’ and ‘Unicorn’ still in the competition, it’s all to play for – and we’ve also see three of the celebrities get ‘unmasked’. Patsy Palmer from Eastenders who was disguised as ‘Butterfly’, Alan Johnson, previous post deliver for the Queen was disguised as ‘Pharaoh’ and most recently revealed: Justin Hawkins, from ‘The Darkness’ failed to impress the judges in week two, and he was unmasked as the ‘Chameleon’ – who happened to have a soft spot for Rita Ora!

Find out on Saturday each week to see which of the following 10 celebrities will make it to the final eight, and join in the conversation online as to whether they’re putting on a good show!

And finally Love Island has returned for a sixth series. There will now be two seasons every year, one in the winter and one in the summer, with the winter one already live on ITV2 every night! We have already seen the first 12 Islanders who headed to South Africa for a ‘Summer of their life’ (but in the Winter). They include Sophie, the younger sister of Rochelle Humes, Paige, who was Scottish singer/songwriter Lewis Capaldi’s ex girlfriend, the sexy scaffolder Callum from Manchester and the irresistible twins Jess and Eve, who look identical! It’s on every single night, with Laura Whitmore also hosting Love Island Aftersun every Monday straight after the one hour show 9-10pm.

So, that’s what I’ll be watching alongside finishing my degree! If you do have some spare time, or want to watch something new, take a look at Dancing on Ice, The Voice UK, The Masked Singer or Love Island!
