Lando Norris secured his first Formula 1 victory of the 2026 season with a commanding drive at the Hungarian Grand Prix, leading home Max Verstappen and championship leader Kimi Antonelli in an action-packed race at the Hungaroring.
After claiming his first pole position of the season on Saturday, Norris looked in control heading into Sunday’s 70-lap race. However, it was teammate Oscar Piastri who made the stronger getaway, sweeping past the Briton into turn one to take the early lead as McLaren immediately found itself battling at the front.
Piastri appeared well placed to fight for victory before his race unravelled midway through the Grand Prix. While attempting to lap Carlos Sainz, the Australian lost valuable time after contact between the pair before later retiring with a gearbox failure, promoting Norris back into the lead.
From there, Norris controlled the race with impressive pace and tyre management, steadily building a comfortable advantage over Verstappen. The reigning world champion was unable to close the gap despite running a different strategy, leaving Norris to cross the finish line more than 15 seconds clear and hand McLaren its first Grand Prix victory of the campaign.
Verstappen’s second-place finish capped another strong recovery after a difficult qualifying session. The Red Bull driver climbed through the field with several decisive overtakes, including an impressive move on Lewis Hamilton, but never looked capable of mounting a serious challenge for victory once Norris established himself at the front.
Antonelli completed the podium with another mature performance for Mercedes. Starting seventh following a grid penalty, the Italian worked his way through the field with a well-executed strategy to secure his ninth podium in 11 races. The result extended his advantage at the top of the Drivers’ Championship heading into Formula 1’s summer break.
Ferrari endured a frustrating afternoon despite showing encouraging pace throughout the weekend. Charles Leclerc finished fourth, while Hamilton crossed the line fifth after a late virtual safety car changed the complexion of his race.
Hamilton had been running in podium contention before Ferrari opted to bring him into the pits during the virtual safety car period. A five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane compounded the setback, dropping the seven-time world champion behind his teammate and ending any hopes of a podium finish.
Further down the order, Isack Hadjar continued his impressive campaign by finishing sixth for Red Bull. George Russell recovered from an anti-stall issue at the start to claim seventh, while Liam Lawson added more points for Racing Bulls in eighth. Nico Hülkenberg and Arvid Lindblad completed the top ten after both produced consistent drives.

Although the Hungaroring is often criticised for producing processional races, Sunday’s contest delivered plenty of drama. The early McLaren battle, strategic variations across the field, multiple retirements, and the late virtual safety car ensured the outcome remained uncertain until the closing stages.
For McLaren, the victory marks an important turning point after a challenging first half of the season. The team has consistently shown improved pace in recent races, and its latest upgrades proved effective around the tight and technical Budapest circuit. Norris converted that performance into a faultless victory, ending an eight-month wait for another Grand Prix triumph and giving McLaren renewed momentum.
The championship picture remains firmly in Antonelli’s favour despite Norris’ victory. The Mercedes driver leaves Hungary with an increased lead over Hamilton, while Verstappen’s runner-up finish keeps him within striking distance as the second half of the season approaches.
Formula 1 now heads into its traditional summer break before returning at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort next month. With McLaren back on the top step, Mercedes continuing to lead both championships, and Red Bull remaining firmly in contention, the battle for the 2026 titles promises to intensify over the remaining races.
