TV Review: Friday Night Dinner Season 6

Everyone’s favourite sitcom saw the Goodman’s sit down for their last family meal in the Friday Night Dinner series, which could also be the last series ever (potentially).

The season six finale of Friday Night Dinner was aired at the start of this weekend, but whilst being a hilarious episode full of the normal family drama (and Jackie’s famous crimbo crumble) viewers are uncertain whether the show will be returning to our screens next year.

In total there are thirty-seven episodes, six for each season plus a season two Christmas special. We watch as Jonny and Adam get older – not necessarily wiser, as their brutal pranks continue throughout the series right until the very end when they promise to still put salt in each other’s drinks.

We cringe as Jim spills paint, dresses up, sleepwalks, and of course we all cry when Wilson dies.  We laugh as Martin makes mistake after mistake, whether that’s by burning Val’s dress, smashing a car window, or managing to get glass in all three courses of the Goodman’s most important and possibly final Friday night dinner.

The Goodman’s and Jim aren’t the only stars of the show though, as the series also introduces us to their “nasty grandma” and “nice grandma”, Mr Morris, Auntie Val, and numerous females.

Friday Night Dinners almost started a movement across the UK, as the show is so relatable to anyone that watches it. Whether you have an annoying sibling, annoying parents, or nosey neighbours.

Shalom Jackie has become a common phrase and a Facebook event ‘Booze up for Wilson’ at Jim’s house had thousands celebrating the life of the beloved dog.

If you are one of the very few people that has never seen the show then I suggest you stop reading now, as there are spoilers ahead.

Season Six has been the most anticipated season of the show, with the first episode drawing in 2.4 million viewers, who were not disappointed when they were shown Martins new investment. The caravan.

The season also showed us a Tinder addict in a cage, an Au Pair with a sweet tooth, a chaotic plastic bag, a death filled birthday, before ending with ‘The Females’.

This episode has been anticipated since the very start of the season and was everything Jackie could have ever wanted. She no longer had to set her sons up with her friends’ daughters for dates, deal with spontaneous Vegas weddings, or pry into their private lives… as much.

This was because BOTH (yes both!) of her sons brought over their girlfriends (finally) for her to meet, BOTH called Lucy! However, after a disastrous dinner she found out that they were BOTH pregnant, and she was finally going to become a grandma.

The show has almost come full circle as the boys are now men, trying to work out what kind of terrible parents they’ll be. Although we’d love another season, I’m not sure I could imagine either of the Goodman son’s as fathers.

The show has reached what feels like a natural end, especially as the finale ended with the Goodman clan, the females, and Jim all dancing in the living room. That is before Martin broke the speaker…
