Sony reveals PlayStation 5 and upcoming titles

Sony gave gamers a first look at the design of the PlayStation 5 (PS5), as well as some of the new titles it will release alongside the new console during the PS5 Reveal last night.

The PS5 will be released alongside Microsoftā€™s rival Xbox Series X before the end of the year and has yet to release a price for the console.

The design showed that it has a black core surrounded by curved white edging, and a blue glow – a notable departure from the traditional full black PlayStation design from the PlayStation 2 onwards. During the reveal, it was shown that the PS5 will come in two configurations: a PS5 with a disk tray and a digital edition. Whilst the console itself has divided opinions on the overall look of the device, fans were impressed with the titles announced for the PS5.

Without further ado, here are five of the best games that we canā€™t wait to play on the PS5.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

This game was one of the first exclusives shown during the reveal. Gamers step into the shoes of Miles Morales as the game picks up where the 2018 Spider-Man left off. While Sonyā€™s announcement didnā€™t show off too much of the gameplay, the teaser trailer showed off new abilities including Milesā€™ electric venom blasts and new features such as changing weather and daylight cycles. The first Spider-Man game became the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 game of all time, so letā€™s hope Spider-Man: Miles Morales lives up to its predecessor.

Stray

The hidden gem of the whole event was an indie game called Stray that appears to involve a cat exploring a robot-populated future city. You play as a stray cat who roams around a futuristic world with no humans – need we say more. Everyone was freaking out over this announcement as the teaser built up a cyberpunk world making it look unique. No gameplay was shown in the teaser, but itā€™s scheduled for a 2021 release. Purr-haps (bad pun I knowā€¦) the most intriguing game shown last night, but it has everyone excited to finally see into the life of a cat.

Demonā€™s Souls

Fans have been asking for this for a long time, and Sony finally delivered! Whilst a remake has been rumoured for a while, the PS5 event showed that itā€™s a full-on group-remake of Demonā€™s Souls. Despite being shown no gameplay footage, the cinematics look incredible. The announcement trailer gave us a stunning tour of some of Boletariaā€™s most iconic locations but enhanced with a bold and more vibrant art style. Sony didnā€™t say when we will be able to play the game, but it will be exclusive to the PS5. Letā€™s hope the game lives up the legacy of Demonā€™s Souls.

Resident Evil 8: Village

This was a sneaky and surprising addition towards the end of the event as Capcom announced the much-anticipated Resident Evil 8. There are some throwbacks to the previous games, as the trailer showcased a Blue Umbrella and an evil Chris Redfield. In this game, it seems that you follow Resident Evil 7 protagonist, Ethan, as he is attempting to live a normal life, but he is being terrorised by Redfield. The trailer had us all shook with werewolves, creepy witches and all-round supernatural chaos. We cannot wait to enter the world of survival horror again in 2021!

Deathloop

Released by Arkane Studios, this title was announced with a stylish cinematic during last year, but we finally got a real look at the gameplay. Thankfully, it did not disappoint, and the gameplay has a sleek style that gives the game a nifty 70s theme. The game is like Battle Royale mixed with Groundhog Day. You are stuck in a time loop and have until midnight to kill eight targets, but you are being pursued by another person. Deathloop looks genuinely fun and unique with the science-fiction element to it, we cannot wait to play it later this year!

Some special mentions:

A ton of games were shown and sadly, we couldnā€™t fit all of them into the top five but we have a few special mentions. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart looked fascinating as the trailer showed futuristic cities and collapsing dimensions which definitely had us intrigued for the next installment in the series.

The sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn was announced, Forbidden West, and finally showed the impressive environments and a plot to discover the source of a plague.

Our final special mention is Sackboy: A Big Adventure – the latest game in the LittleBigPlanet franchise.

Delivering a variety of content, Sony definitely pulled out all the stops to impress fans and rival the Xbox Series X reveal. The PS5 will be released during the Holiday season this year, setting up a ā€œbattle royaleā€ between the PS5 and new Xbox Series X for Christmas 2020.
