TV Review: Sex Life

The Netflix original series ‘Sex Life’ is the racy summer series we have all been waiting for since the release of Fifty Shades of Grey and Netflix’s 365 Days.

An eight-part series filled with sweaty sex scenes and raunchy romance but this series goes beyond just sex; the series touches upon every topic such as infidelity, femininity, marriage and motherhood.

It follows Billie Connelly, played by Sarah Shahi, as she battles with the sensual fantasies that she has about her ex-boyfriend, music producer Brad Simon, played by Adam Demos.

Although Billie is married to Cooper Connelly (Mike Vogel) sharing two children and a seemingly perfect life with him – however, compared to her younger years the sexual chemistry within her marriage is not what she truly desires or once had with Brad.

Similar to 50 shades and 365 Days, ‘Sex Life’ is inspired by a novel – ’44 chapters about 4 Men’ by BB Easton.

Easton’s novel is based on her own female sexuality that dives into deep detail about her sex life, as she re-visits her previous partner like Billie does with Brad in the series.

Throughout each episode taboo topics surrounding female sexuality are addressed becoming a huge driving force behind empowering women to own their sexuality and desires.

Ranking at number one on Netflix in the UK since its release on June 25th, it is evident that everyone is addicted to this series – just as Brad is to Billie.

Sex Life’s high ranking on the Netflix chart goes to show that sex sells and everybody loves a saucy series to take them away from their own lives.

To say Billie is portrayed as this sex goddess with a wild past it is surprising she cannot open up to her husband about her past and tell him what she wants in the bedroom.

Instead she turns to her laptop to write down her true thoughts and feelings in a journal, which her husband just so happens to read throwing her mundane life into chaos.

Stacy Rukeyser, the creator of ‘Sex Life’, has dubbed the series as the ‘big sister’ to the 2020 Netflix hit TV series Bridgerton: “I think we are like the big sister to Bridgerton because Bridgerton takes a real look at female sexuality and desire as well but its all about first experiences.

“We’re the big sister to say this is what happens when you grow up and you’re at the next stage of your life; and here is the next set of complications that could happen.”

Rukeyser wants women to feel seen and to celebrate their sexuality instead of shying away from it because your a wife or a mother with responsibilities now.

There is already much buzz around the potential for a second season, especially as we were left on a cliff hanger at the end of the series with Billies desire still burning for Brad.

This series makes you question – can you truly love two people at the same time?

Yet, the Sex Life series goes to show – marriage can be tricky, communication is key and it is okay to question your happily ever after.
