15 of the most questionable lyrics of all time

As someone who listens to the radio a lot, I’m often met with songs that don’t appeal to me, the most notable being Doja by Central Cee.

It’s not the genre that I dislike, rather, it’s the uncertainty that the lyrics bring me. Luckily its presence on daytime radio is slowly dying, but it made me question how many other lyrics are also this farcical.

In an effort to remember them off the top of my head, I failed. So, I put the question to my Instagram followers, and the answers were too good not to share.

1. ‘How can I be homophobic, my b*tch is gay’ – Doja, Central Cee

The song itself is actually very catchy. Those familiar with the music of the early noughties will recognise that it samples Eve and Gwen Stefani’s Let Me Blow Your Mind. It also welcomed fame in the form of TikTok wherein a single snippet generated over 13 million plays. Still, the lyrics have been put up for debate on various forms of social media with many users pointing out how much of the song requires censoring.

2. ‘Driving so fast ’bout to p*ss on myself’- 4×4, Miley Cyrus

Fourteen-year-old me was obsessed with the Bangerz album. In hindsight, I don’t know if 14-year-old me should have been listening to the majority of the tracks on it but let’s say it made me who I am today. With that said, so much of the album’s content was up for welcome debate. The album itself received heavy criticism but at least we can look back and laugh.

3. ‘She blow that d*ck like a cello’ – Peek A Boo, Migos

4. ‘I’m so 3008, you’re so 2000 and late’ – Boom Boom Pow, the Black Eyed Peas

Arguably an iconic lyric but still nonsense.

5. ‘I don’t eat sushi, I’m the sh*t, no I’m pollution, no substitution’ – Look At Me Now, Chris Brown ft. Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes

I don’t actually have a bad word to say about this song. Admittedly though, there is an unhealthy amount of profanity in it and it is likely one of the fastest-paced raps of this century. However, listening to this song is guaranteed to put a smile on your face – it is utter nonsense, but in the best way possible.

6. ‘She’s a killer queen, gunpowder, gelatine’ – Killer Queen, Queen

7. ‘I’m serious as cancer when I say rhythm is a dancer’ – Rhythm Is a Dancer, Snap!

8. ‘Poopy-di scoop, Scoop-diddy-whoop, Whoop-di-scoop-di-poop’ – Lift Yourself, Ye

Despite what people choose to believe regarding Kanye West’s life and politics, he is still an amazing artist. Kanye produced some of the best hits of the noughties and early 2010s but I think it’s safe to say he missed the mark in this verse. However, you have to give him credit. This nonsense lyric likely caused an influx of listeners looking to see the new direction Kanye was going for.

9. ‘Do that p*ssy purr? I said ‘Yep, meow’’ – Super Freaky Girl, Nicki Minaj

This is another sampling example and 2022 release, Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl”. The song, whilst snappy, has received mixed reviews. Initially blowing up as a TikTok trend, “Super Freaky Girl” is nothing out of the ordinary for Nicki – it’s one of those songs that you love to hate.

10. ‘You’re about as easy as a nuclear war’ – Is There Something I Should Know?, Duran Duran

11. ‘Making them drool down their chinny-chin-chins’ – Kiss You, One Direction

12. ‘My p*ssy tastes like Pepsi Cola’ – Cola, Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey is best known for her melancholic tones inspired by contemporary culture. In 2017 she confirmed that her 2012 song, “Cola”, was in fact partially inspired by Harvey Weinstein. However, the ‘Pepsi Cola’ part was more of a quote from her then boyfriend. Credit where credit is due, there is a notable difference in the taste between Coke and Pepsi.

13. ‘Woman, you are 64 years old’ – Wintering, The 1975

14. ‘I’m a racist and you’re some kind of sl*g’ – When We Are Together, The 1975

15. ‘John’s obsessed with fat ass and he’s 10 years old’ – Wintering, The 1975

No hate towards Matt Healy and The 1975 but their new album, “Being Funny in a Foreign Language”, resulted in some rather entertaining contenders for worst song lyrics.

The list could go on forever and this topic is definitely worth posing to the group chat.
