Review: Night Moves at Rock City

On Saturday night Rock City played host to the four-piece Indie-rock band Night Moves and their performance was nothing short of captivating.

Embarking on their first tour of Europe, John Pelant opened the concert by explaining they ā€œdidnā€™t really know what to expectā€ from crossing the pond.

I didnā€™t really know what to expect either until their opening song ā€˜Recollectionsā€™ completely enveloped the room with its velvety smooth melodies from the word go. In perfect harmony the group went forward, seamlessly moving from song to song, taking the audience on a hypnotic musical journey, which I promise can only be described as utterly transcendental.

John Pelant stared longingly out into the strikingly bare audience. His voice reverberating around the corners of the room, effortlessly belting out a haunting yet soulful voice that could have been plucked straight out of the ā€™80s. Pelant swiftly moved between lead guitar and piano, with minimal effort and with that, the band showed incredible variation with their rich and well-constructed texture. The real standout, however, was the bass player Micky Alfano, the soul of every psychedelic melody the band played that night, drinking an ice-cold corona throughout the concert, he was the moustached captain commanding the ship.

By the time the band were playing their most popular song ā€˜Coloured Emotionsā€™, the intimate audience were uncontrollably tapping their feet, nodding their heads and in one particular case, full-on grooving. They were fully lost in the hazy melodies the band were continually churning out, not wasting a single second.

When Night Moves next come to town, do yourself a favour and come down.
