Nottingham City Council set up 28-day challenge to reduce carbon emission

Holidaymakers who are frustrated by the pandemic and stuck in Nottingham might be cheered up by some good news that also contributes to a greener city.

A 28-day challenge was set up to engage local communities in activities that raise awareness of climate issues while keep residents entertained before the summer ends.

The challenge, known as #28For28 is launched by Nottingham City Council on Saturday, August 1, is part of the Councilā€™s pledge to become the first city in the UK to be carbon neutral by 2028.

Organisations that joined this campaign include Nottinghamshire NHS, Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity (FOSAC) creator Ignite and Ecotrophelia UK 2020 award wining team Re-Dessert from the University of Nottingham.

There are family-friendly activities ranging from Scavenger Hunt, cycling, seed-planting to drawing, cooking and song-writing.

At the start of each day a video will be released by a different partner organisation which leads the daily challenge, explaining information about the challenge and how to take apart.

Councillor Sally Longford, Deputy Leader of Nottingham City Council and Portfolio Holder for Energy and Environment, said: ā€œThe 28-Day Challenge is there to help us work together to reduce Nottinghamā€™s carbon footprint by taking small, manageable steps.

ā€œIn a difficult time for many, this campaign is designed to create safe opportunities to make positive changes with many benefits, fitting into the cityā€™s strong green recovery.

ā€œWe need everyone in Nottingham to get on board so we can all do this together.ā€

Some events that took place during the challenge were Pledge & Plant Seed planting with Nottingham Seed Sovereignty, Biodiversity Scavenger Hunt with NHS and Sustainable Music Workshop with music producer Oscar Speed.
