NTU Sport facilities: How can I get involved?

Coming to university presents an amazing chance to either continue the sport you’re passionate about or take up entirely new sports.

Nottingham Trent University is one of the leading sporting universities in the UK, with some amazing facilities and a recent rise to ninth in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) rankings.

With such an outstanding pedigree, the opportunities for all students here are plentiful.

It all begins with the NTU Sport app.

Available to download on the App Store and Google Play, the NTU Sport app gives you everything you need in one place, from links to book facilities to joining sports clubs and signing up for Play for Fun sessions.

Bookings can take place for a wide range of courts, including badminton, basketball, futsal, netball and table tennis on City Campus, plus squash, tennis and 7-a-side football on top of this at Clifton Campus.

Fitness classes offer all kinds of sessions, including yoga, Zumba, Pilates and spin.

Play for Fun sessions are the informal, most inclusive sessions available on campus, with all kinds of sports giving the chance for students to pick up old skills, develop new ones and generally enjoy being active with the help of NTU Sport instructors.

Beyond this, there are also Intramural sports competitions to get involved in, where groups can enter as a way of forming bonds at accommodations or representing their courses.

Also very much worth downloading is the NTU Moves app, which is a great way to be rewarded for the activity you do.

Able to sync with Apple Health, Fitbit, Withings, Google Fit, Strava or Garmin devices, NTU Moves tracks the steps, running, cycling and swimming you do, with different rewards for each.

100 steps equate to one point, one mile of running gives you 45 points, one mile of cycling gives you 15 and 100 metres of swimming gives five points.

Once earned, points can be exchanged for university-related rewards, including an NTU Print Tee (8,000 points), Sweatshirt (20,000) and Hoodie (25,000), as well as tasty treats such as Smoothies (2,800) and Medium Hot Drinks (2,000).

There is also the chance to donate points to make money for great causes, including £5 to John Van Geest Cancer Research (5,000 points) and £3 to Blood Cancer UK (3,000).

You don’t need to have an NTU Sport Active Membership to have any of these benefits, just to be an enrolled student.

However, if you want even more from your time at NTU, then Sport Membership may be for you.

For the price of £110 for a one-year membership, or £220 for three years, you get free court bookings, free social sports sessions, full access to NTU Sport gyms, priority booking for classes and access to 90 other University gyms through BUCS UNIversal.

Be quick though; these prices are Early Bird offers, which expire on 16 October.

First-year students also get a free two-week membership this year, which is an added incentive if you’re looking at purchasing a membership.

There are slight differences for International Students, online sports memberships and students with bursaries that are explained on the NTU Sport website here.

So, if you’re a City Campus student and want to make the most out of the City Sports Centre, which was built in 2013 and has a two-storey gym, 10m climbing wall, huge sports hall, dance studio and sports therapy suite, then membership is for you.

For those at Clifton Campus, sports facilities are a huge part of the offering, with the Lee Westwood Sports Centre, NTU Tennis Centre and Clifton Village Cricket Ground all amazing facilities on your doorstep.

There’s also the partnership that Brackenhurst Campus has with Southwell Leisure Centre, which gives students membership deals at the fantastic facilities nearby.

Sport is massive at NTU, and whatever your interest is, there is sure to be something for you.

Get involved, have fun and be proud to be NTU.
