A perfectly curated playlist to help you through your studies

The first month of university can be overwhelming. The buzz of Freshers’ week wears off and you are left with a bunch of hazey memories and a stack of assignments you barely remember being given. If you’re the kind of person that needs to listen to music to get any work done, here’s an article of songs specifically for those late nights spent cracking open the books.

Happy/Upbeat: If you like to listen to music that promotes good vibes when tackling an assignment, check out these happy songs.

BOP – Will Joseph Cook

This song is easily one of my favourites of the year and has been on repeat since I first heard it. Will Joseph Cook always delivers light-hearted, easy-listening vibes, and this bop is no exception. The storytelling of his lyrics and the fun and catchy chorus make this a slice of indie optimism that’s bound to get your foot tapping.

Mouthwash – Kate Nash

Throwing it back a little here… you may know Kate Nash for her song ‘Foundations’, which is an undeniable indie classic and a favourite at Rescue Rooms’ Pressure. However, her song ‘Mouthwash’ is also packed with uninhibited good vibes that 00s indie loved so much.

Why You So Sad? – Wax Works

In this song, Wax Works challenges his pessimism to a tune reminiscent of Still Woozy’s ‘Get Down’ and Declan Mckenna’s ‘My House’, making it the perfect anthem for turning over a new leaf. The tune brings good vibes and will make writing your next essay a breeze.

Chill: If you need to wind down mellow beats will be more your thing. The list below has some of my favourite songs to chill out to.

Sunshine Sometimes – Bedouine

This song has beautiful guitar picking and there’s something so sweet and lullaby-like in the way it is sung. If the feeling of home could be bottled up and put into a song, it would be this one, making it a charming little tune to destress to.

Sun Room – Far Caspian

The delicate whispery vocals paired with the intricate guitar picking makes this song feel like a warm hot chocolate on a cold autumn day. It serves as a much-needed refuge for anyone feeling weighed down by work.

Let me alone – moow

Sometimes songs with lyrics can get confusing when writing and before you know it, your essay can consist of 50% topical research and 50% of Taylor Swift’s discography. If you are looking for wordless, lo-fi vibes listening to this song is the perfect place to start. Featuring a sample of Nico’s ‘These days’, this compact tune evokes feelings of serenity that will counter any exam blues.

Nostalgic: If you like to spend your study time in a coffee shop, a wave of nostalgia might be more up your street.

Kiss Me – pinkpirate

Pinkpirate’s cover of this classic hit by Sixpence None the Richer stays true to the yearning of the original, but with a more tender and mellow feel. If you were not romanticising your study session before, you will be once adding this song to your playlist.

circle the drain – Soccer Mommy

Despite being a new song, this tune manages to capture the essence of the 90s and early 00s, with its distorted guitar riffs and bubbly sound effects that transport you to a simpler time. If ever there’s a song that makes you feel like you’re floating, it’s this one.

Energetic: If you need all senses stimulated by what you’re listening to, here are some songs that might help.

Everybody Wants to Be Famous – Superorganism

There isn’t a song that is quite as good as positively overloading the senses as this one. The multitude of overlapping, bass-filled sounds is enough to give you goosebumps and it will surely kick your brain into gear and get you motivated.

Space-Cowboy – No Rome

If you only know No Rome from his hit Narcissist featuring The 1975, there’s much more you’re yet to hear. This song is full of glitchy vocals that satisfy the ears, and if that’s the kind of stuff that gets your brain waves moving, I’d recommend this song for your studies.

I hope these songs relieve some of the pressure surrounding assignments. At the very least, I hope you’ve found some songs that you like listening to.

Good luck with your studies!
